“Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitors have been used for the symptomatic treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. Eleven whole plants from Panama belonging to the Lycopodiaceae family have been screened for their anticholinesterase inhibitory and antioxidant activities by a thin-layer chromatography (TLC) bioautography method. Of these, only Lycopodium clavatum subsp. clavatum showed strong AChE inhibition. Seven plant extracts showed moderate inhibition, two of them, Huperzia cf chamaeleon and Huperzia reflexa, also possessed an antioxidant activity. This is the first report of anticholinesterase and antioxidant activities in these two native plants.

to tubular injury. Methods: In this retrospective study, immunohistochemical staining to assess the degree of FLC deposition, periodic acid-Schiff staining for the degree of tubular brush border injury and trichrome staining for interstitial fibrosis were evaluated. Normal renal parenchyma from tumor nephrectomy specimens (control group I, n = 39), minimal change disease controls (group II, n = 13), renal biopsies from CKD and proteinuria (polyclonal study group III, n = 33) and monoclonal light chain nephropathy (group IV, n = 37) were P505-15 supplier studied. The results of the study including serum creatinine were compared between groups. Results: Both polyclonal and monoclonal groups (groups III and IV) had significantly higher light chain deposition and brush border injury by periodic acid-Schiff scores compared to control groups (groups I and II). groups (13.2% to 17.5%, p<0.01); there were no significant differences between the Add and Switch groups. “Novel block copolymers comprising poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and an oligo(tyrosine) block were synthesized in different compositions by N-carboxyanhydride (NCA) polymerization. It was shown that PEG2000-Tyr(6) undergoes thermoresponsive hydrogelation at a low concentration range of 0.25-3.0 wt % within a temperature range of 25-50 degrees C. Cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (Cryo-TEM) revealed a continuous network of fibers throughout the hydrogel sample, even at concentrations as low as 0.25 wt %. Circular dichroism (CD) results suggest that better packing of the beta-sheet tyrosine block at increasing temperature induces the reverse thermogelation. A preliminary assessment of the potential of the hydrogel for in vitro application confirmed the hydrogel is not cytotoxic, is biodegradable, and produced a sustained release of a small-molecule drug.

Skin prick tests (SPT) with common, fungal and occupational allergens, estimation of serum total IgE level, spirometry, histamine test and specific inhalative challenge test with occupational allergens were performed in all subjects. The prevalence of hypersensitivity to fungal species was higher
among farmers (32.5%) than bakers (16.2%). Positive SPT with mould allergens were found among 10.8% farmers and 6.8% bakers with occupational allergy.
